Jan Skater of the Month

Name: Kenny Felton

Nickname: Kenny

Age: 55

Marital Status: Married

Have been skating for how long: I ice skated for about 10 years as a child (League hockey). I spent a short time inline skating 20+ years ago, but this time around it's been 6 months and I'm much more serious about it.

Equipment Brand and Type: K2 VO2 90 Pro.

Life Philosophy: Keep trying to get better a little bit at a time. This applies to everything I do and works well, over time.

Favorite Time of Day to Skate: I skate all times of the day. Whenever the temperature, sun and free time are the best.

Favorite Skating Events: Pace Yourself Skate Race (Veloway).

Awards / Competitive Wins: None yet, but I'm working on it.

Most memorable incident / Biggest skating adventure: My first time around the Veloway was probably the biggest learning experience I had, skating-wise. It may not sound like much, but I learned a lot about downhill control, uphill, turns and wipeouts in just one lap! It's now a benchmark I use, to see how much I have improved.

What do I get from skating: I love the rhythm of skating. The way it flows and the fact that it is a low impact aerobic exercise. It's the only form of exercise where I'm not counting the minutes before it ends.

Would like to do this year in skating: I would like to finish a half marathon at the Battle at Bear Creek.

Coolest Accomplishment: Becoming a certified Sifu, in Ving Tsun kung fu (pronounced Wing Chun).

Other sports / hobbies you enjoy: I am a semi-pro (formerly professional) musician, Teach Ving Tsun kung fu, Assistant SCUBA instructor.

Favorite skating gadget / tool: Sporty Pal app for my smart phone.

Mentors:Neil MacPherson (My unofficial trainer),John Thurman, Steve Rogers, Bill Harrison, Nicole Fisher (keep me motivated to be better, even though they may not know it).

What do you enjoy about being a member of HCIC:Everyone is so friendly and supportive.

Helpful Advice to Beginners: Keep moving forward and try to improve, every time you skate. Measure your accomplishments over time and you'll see more improvement.

Favorite Quotes: "He who live long life, have friends with much restraint." Fortune Cookie
