May Skater of the Month

Name: Anna Cokeley

Nickname: Anna Banana when I was younger, but no one calls me that anymore

Age: 51

Marital Status: Happily Married

Have been skating for how long:I started ice skating when I was 11. I took to the pavement in 1998 when I got my first pair of inline skates (K2 Ascent).

Equipment Brand and Type: Powerslide Trinity Swell 110 (3-wheel)

Life Philosophies: "There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle." - Albert Einstein
Look around at all the beauty in God's creation and tell me that miracles don't exist

Favorite Time of Day to Skate: Early evening (as long as it's not blazing hot outside).

Favorite Skating Event: Not sure yet. I've only participated in Pace Yourself races, but I hope to travel and start competing (maybe Northshore in September).

Awards/Competitive Wins: I won my first half marathon Pace Yourself last Saturday. Woo hoo!

Most Memorable Incident: When I skated the Coastal Trail in Anchorage, AK for the first time - incredible scenery in the land of the midnight sun! The 2nd was skating the Veloway for the first time which was July 4, 2017.

What do you get from Skating: It's great therapy! I like that I have an alternative workout without the joint pain I get from running.

Would like to do this Year in Skating: Get my endurance (and speed) up so I can finish marathon distance.

Coolest Accomplishment: Raising my two amazing kids, Justin (25) & Miranda (22), as a single parent for most of it.

Other Sports/Hobbies you Enjoy: Running, biking, hiking, snowboarding, wakeboarding, kayaking & SUPing at Ladybird Lake.

Favorite skating gadget/tool: It's not really a skating gadget, but I love my Apple watch and using it to track my workouts.

What do you enjoy about being a member of HCIC:Meeting a lot of awesome & interesting people that I have something in common with. Getting together to skate at the Veloway and also doing the fun non-skating events that Nicole organizes.

Mentors: wouldn't say they are my mentors since I don't personally know them, but I listen to a lot of Tony Robbins, Joel Osteen, Les Brown & Zig Ziglar. I would take any one of them to be my mentor.

Helpful advice to other skaters/ Beginners: Join HCIC!

Favorite quote:"To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know that one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." - Ralph Waldo Emerson
